Srinagar, Sep 25 (KNO): The Jammu and Kashmir Government has said there is currently no approved proposal for upgradation or widening of the Srinagar-Yousmarg road via Chadoora, even as it acknowledged that the route carries substantial and growing traffic.
The matter was raised by Chadoora MLA Ali Mohammad Dar through a question in the Legislative Assembly, seeking the status of any proposal for widening and strengthening the road, particularly congested and vulnerable stretches. The question was listed among the Assembly's road-related matters on September 25.
In its reply, the Public Works (R&B) Department, as reported by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said the road is an important corridor connecting Srinagar with Charar-i-Sharief, Pakharpora and Yousmarg, and carries substantial vehicular traffic, including local commuters and visitors travelling to religious shrines and tourist destinations.
The government said the stretch under PMGSY Kashmir from Charar-i-Sharief to Kanidajan Chowk is performing satisfactorily. However, the route as a whole carries a substantial and growing daily traffic volume, while its narrow/intermediate-lane configuration, particularly around Chadoora town, results in congestion during periods of heavy traffic.
Regarding widening or upgradation, the department stated that at present there is no approved proposal for upgradation, widening or strengthening of the road.
The MLA had sought details about the proposed length, estimated cost, scope of work and timeline if any such assessment or proposal was under consideration—(KNO)
